Disabling auto-forwarding

What is happening?

As part of an administration-driven effort to better secure email accounts originating from and owned by the University of Illinois, Technology Services Privacy and Cybersecurity will take actions in FY21 and FY22.

The ability to auto-forward from @illinois.edu, @uillinois.edu, and @uif.uillinois.edu email addresses to personal email addresses will be disabled September 27, 2021.

Why is this happening?

Auto-forwarding employee email moves University of Illinois business into uncontrolled environments where the university cannot meet its commitments to secure personal information, university data, research, and internal process or other internal business affairs. In addition, private and non-university email providers are not accountable or responsive to university or state legal, ethical, and compliance requirements.

What do I need to do?

A message was sent to faculty and staff members who are auto-forwarding informing them of the change and pointing them to this FAQ: https://answers.uillinois.edu/illinois/110048. We also will direct them to the Knowledgebase where they can learn how to turn off auto-forwarding now. https://answers.uillinois.edu/109993, https://answers.uillinois.edu/illinois/86742
